Start here: your car
Whether you are ready to finally get your home into a place that makes you feel calmer, or you are just trying to tackle some spots that have gotten a little crazy, the car is the perfect place to start. This will be super quick with less decision making, so it’s the perfect place to get in the groove.
Go get gas. While you are there, get all the garbage out of your car. There is a garbage can right there!
When you get home, before you go in, do a quick sort through the stuff still in your car and make three piles: donate, bring inside, and keep in the car.
The donate pile can stay in the car (IN THE FRONT SEAT!) for a quick drop off at your favorite donation center. This includes stuff that has been rolling around back there that you never use, like the tennis racket from three years ago.
Bring the items that belong in your house inside, but before you even set it down, walk around a put it where it belongs. An item at rest stays at rest, so just put it up!
There are going to be items that belong in the car, like emergency items or cold weather gear, depending on where you live. I think it is best for them to all be contained together, so a small zip-up bag or container is great to keep on the floorboard or trunk. Don’t buy anything special- use what you have! Also keep in mind that you don’t have to keep everything you might possibly want to have at any given day or time or season in the car. Trust yourself to pack what you will need for an outing without keeping everything you own in the car “just in case”.
Now your car is calmer! You can take it to a car wash for a quick vacuum if you are in the mood and have time, or ask for a gift certificate for detailing for the next holiday!
I think the car is a great place to start. Sometimes when we go big on minimizing our home, things can feel a little chaotic at moments, and that is ok. But now your car can be a safe space! And now you also have room for all the donations to give away and items to sell!
Come again!
